No-code algo trading platform or a custom bot?

You can now automate a trading strategy without writing code. Visual builders let you assemble rules from blocks, test them and run them through your broker for a monthly fee. For many traders that is the right answer, and we say so. Here is how to tell whether you are one of them.

The short answer

A no-code platform is the right choice if your rules fit its building blocks, it supports your broker, and a monthly fee suits you. A custom bot is worth it when your rules do not fit the blocks, your broker is not supported, you want code you can own with no subscription, or it has to connect to your own systems. Many traders start on a no-code platform and move to a custom build when they hit a limit.

What the no-code platforms offer

A few examples, described from their own sites:

  • Composer (US): a visual, no-code editor for building and backtesting strategies, with trades and rebalancing carried out automatically.
  • Option Alpha (US): no-code bots for options and stocks, built from templates or from scratch, with risk controls and scheduled automations.
  • Tradetron (India and abroad): a web-based strategy builder that connects to a large number of brokers, including US brokers.
  • Streak (India): a no-code strategy builder and backtester in the Zerodha ecosystem.
  • AlgoTest (India): no-code building, backtesting, paper trading and automation, with integrations across many brokers.

When a no-code platform is the right choice

  • Your rules can be expressed with the platform’s building blocks.
  • The platform supports your broker and the instruments you trade.
  • You want to start this week, and a monthly fee suits you.
  • You are still shaping the strategy and expect to change it often.

When a custom bot is worth it

  • The rules do not fit the blocks: your own indicator, unusual entry logic, multi-leg handling beyond the templates, or outside data such as a separate feed.
  • Your broker is not supported, or you trade across several brokers or accounts under one set of limits.
  • You want the code to be yours, private and portable, with no subscription. See owning your trading system.
  • It has to connect to other systems: your database, dashboards or reporting.

The common path

Many traders start on a no-code platform, learn what their rules really are, and move to a custom build when they hit a limit. That is a good order to do it in: the rules built on the platform become a clear brief, and our starter trading bot covers a single strategy on one broker. If you are weighing who should build it rather than which platform, read freelancer, marketplace or a firm. For larger systems, see custom algorithmic trading software, and to choose a broker API, our broker API comparison.

Common questions

Is a no-code algo trading platform good enough?
For many traders, yes. If your rules fit the platform’s building blocks, your broker is supported and a monthly fee suits you, a no-code platform is often the quickest and cheapest way to automate. A custom bot earns its cost when you hit the platform’s limits.
Can I move from a no-code platform to a custom bot later?
Yes, and it is a common path. The rules you built on the platform become the brief for the custom build. We rewrite them as code and check the signals against what the platform produced before anything trades.
Do you build strategies for no-code platforms?
No. We build software that runs your own rules. We don’t supply, sell or recommend strategies on any platform.
